Explanation
Retail packaging and grouped packaging for sparkling or semi-sparkling wines in quantities of 22 litres or less typically accumulate as waste with private final consumers – i.e. private households and comparable sources of waste generation (within the meaning of section 3 (11) VerpackG) such as food and beverage businesses, canteens and commercial kitchens. Single-use beverage packaging for sparkling or semi-sparkling wines that is exempt from deposit under section 31 (4) nos. 7a and 7c VerpackG is subject to system participation.
Regardless of any deposit obligation, sparkling or semi-sparkling wine packaging with a bundling function is subject to system participation in quantities of 22 litres or less. Gift packaging containing 22 litres or less typically accumulates as waste with private final consumers – i.e. private households and comparable sources of waste generation and is subject to system participation.

Shipment packaging for sparkling or semi-sparkling wine of all kinds typically accumulates as waste with private final consumers – i.e. private households and comparable sources of waste generation and, as such, is subject to system participation.
Specials
A folding box made of paperboard to be filled with six, eight, ten or even twelve 0.75 or 24 0.2 litre glass bottles filled with sparkling or semi-sparkling wines does not constitute packaging subject to system participation because it typically accumulates as waste in retail settings. For example, traditional 6-pack sparkling wine boxes constitute transport packaging. Single-use plastic bottles (except for glass or metal bottles where only caps, lids, labels, stickers or wrappings are made of plastic) and beverage cans in quantities between 0.1 and 3 litres and filled with sparkling wine and sparkling wine-based cocktails with a sparkling wine content of at least 50 percent and sparkling drinks made of alcohol-free or low alcohol wine according to section 31 (4) no. 7a VerpackG are subject to deposit. This also applies to (processed) wine-like drinks and cocktails with a content of wine-like products of at least 50 percent pursuant to section 31 (4) no. 7c VerpackG.

Delineation criterion
Delineation criterion

Criterion that relates to a specific product and determines whether the shipment, retail or grouped packaging in question is subject to system participation.

For food packaging, that delineation criterion often is quantity. For packaging filled with other products, the delineation criterion tends to be the number/volume or unit of the individual products contained in the packaging. Depending on the product, other criteria may be used within the scope of an overall market assessment to delineate or determine whether the system participation requirement applies to a packaging, such as the stress class in the case of laminate products.
